The Government of Samoa

The Government of the Independent State of Samoa is made up of three main pillars.

Legislature

The Legislature is responsible for making laws and regulations in Samoa. It consists of the Parliament, which is a unicameral body composed of Members of Parliament (MPs) elected by the citizens of Samoa. The Parliament debates and passes laws, approves the budget, and oversees the executive branch. The Head of State, elected by the Parliament for a five-year term, acts as the ceremonial representative of the state.

Executive

The Executive branch is responsible for implementing and enforcing laws and policies. It is headed by the Prime Minister, who is the head of government and exercises executive authority. The Prime Minister is appointed by the Head of State and leads the Cabinet, which is composed of ministers appointed by the Prime Minister from among the members of Parliament. The Executive branch manages day-to-day governance and administration of the country.

Judiciary

The Judiciary is responsible for interpreting laws and administering justice in Samoa. It is independent of the legislative and executive branches. The Supreme Court is the highest judicial body in Samoa, with jurisdiction over constitutional matters and appeals from lower courts. Below the Supreme Court are the District Courts, which handle civil and criminal cases, and the Land and Titles Court, which adjudicates matters related to customary land and titles. The judiciary ensures the rule of law and protects the rights of citizens.
