We gather this morning in solemn tribute to mark ANZAC Day in the year 2026. On this sacred occasion, we honor the men and women of New Zealand, Australia, Samoa, and their allies who served in war, who endured hardship, and who made great sacrifices in the cause of duty for freedom, and peace. We remember the fallen, the wounded, and the survivors who returned home carrying the pain and scars of conflict long after the battle had ended.
ANZAC Day holds a special place in the life of our region. It is a day of remembrance, but also a day of reflection. It calls us to honor courage in the face of fear, endurance during suffering, and loyalty that binds people together in times of trial.
We are especially honoured by the presence of the diplomatic community this morning. Your presence reminds us that the history and pain of war have been shared by many nations. Across the world, countless families and communities have known loss, sacrifice, and sorrow. Today, in standing together, we affirm not only remembrance, but also our common humanity and our shared hope for peace.
For Samoa, this occasion is one of respect, gratitude, and friendship. We acknowledge all those from our region, and from Samoa itself, who served in different ways, including in peace-keeping and national service. Their example continues to inspire duty, service, and unity.
The Government of Samoa remains steadfast in its support for this commemoration and for the values it represents. We acknowledge with gratitude the Samoa Returned Services Association and all partners who continue to preserve this important tradition with dignity and devotion.
As we honour those who came before us, let us also pray for peace in our world. Let us pray for wisdom among leaders, restraint in times of tension, and compassion among nations.
On this ANZAC Day, let us remember with gratitude, honour with humility, and renew our commitment to reconciliation, justice, and peace.
